ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN PROJECT
Semester 6 forms the culmination of the Bachelor of Science (Honours) (Architecture) programme. This capstone project is based on the theme of architecture with a social impact and the resolution and integration of technology, environment and cultural context in architectural design. Progressing from the urban issues of urban street environment , the design studio extends students development of architectural position and design brief in proposing strategy to resolving social issues pertinent within the conditions of the urban landscape (for example, elderly, neglected communities, school, youth centre). Students is to further develop the site and program chosen by their design supervisor that addresses the social needs of a particular urban place and provide interaction and connection of people in the urban spaces. Subsequently, students produce detailed design of a selected portion of scheme. The design work is to be supported by a comprehensive design report.
This module is a thematic studio based on the theme of “sustaining humanities’’—architecture for people, place and time. Designing for sustainability has been a fundamental issue for architects in our time within global and regional contexts. In line with the current discourse on sustainability, It upholds the belief that architecture can create better places, that architecture can affect society and humanity, and that it can have a role in making a place civilized by making a community more liveable.
Students are required to develop the design project proposed by their supervisor in a way that reflects the theme and finalizes a programme that addresses the needs of the required user group. This solution should also aim to provide spaces that invite interaction with the surrounding contextual conditions. In addition to the theme of sustaining humanities, the module focuses on the development of students’ ability to integrate considerations of technology, environmental sustainability and the broader cultural context into architectural design. This studio also offers a platform for students to develop their own position in developing their individual project.
Learning Outcomes for this project:
1. Produce a formal architectural design strategy in response to the proposed brief within a selected architectural context that display a strong architectural proposition
2. Analyze case studies to gain understanding of architectural responses and intentional design strategies to inform the design project
3. Produce design development drawings for a selected portion of design with a suitable level of complexity
4. Produce drawings (both 2D and 3D), modeling and verbal presentation to communicate and visualize architectural design and ideas
5. Design with considerations of building performance (thermal comfort, acoustic and lighting), regulatory frameworks, and health/safety considerations
6. Produce a design report to support the project
This project is located in Malacca. From this project, I learn how to generate an architectural design strategy to overcome different types of issues. Precedent studies is very important before starting design, exploration of model is very important as well. Other than that, I was also been able to produce drawings both 2D and 3D, modelling and visualizing better, while putting considerations onto the building performance and UBBL.
